THE ROLE OF URBAN AGRICULTURE AND SOME URBAN AGRICULTURAL MODELS IN THE WORLD

Abstract

Urban agriculture has appeared a long time ago. However, only when many urban areas were established during the period of the industrial revolution, urban agriculture has been gotten more attention to develop. This paper mentions that although there are many different definitions of the urban agriculture, all of them identify the urban agriculture’s important roles including: supplying fresh food for urban people; creating job and increasing income for a part of the urban population; contributing to the urban landscape and improving the public health. Some countries such as Cuba, China and Taiwan has recognized the important roles of the urban agriculture for the city’s life, they have been constantly developing urban agriculture and have be able to gain some successes. Therefore, the author has studied the concept and identified some issues for Ho Chi Minh City as references for the process of planning and implementing the strategy of restructuring the agriculture for the development of the urban agriculture for the city.
