Based on migration approach from the place of origin, this paper explores a random sample survey data of 2100 households in 21 communes of 7 Southwest provinces in 2016 on migrant workers and access to social security policies. Results show that the characteristics of migrant workers differ significantly by economic sector and migration space. Migrant workers in the formal sector are accessible to social insurance, health insurance and professional training, while those in the informal sector are very limited. The low vocational training, the short-term training, the ineffective training, and the weak ties to the destination are obstacles for migrant workers to adapt to the fast-changing context and create a stable life.
