THE NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY ORGANIZATION: RESTRUCTURING AND FUTURE SCENARIOS

Abstract

After more than seven decades of existence, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) remains widely regarded as one of the most successful military alliances in modern history. However, as the international order has undergone profound transformations in the twenty-first century, NATO has increasingly faced a range of structural challenges. This article addresses three main issues. First, it examines NATO’s transformation through the theoretical lens of alliance theory. Second, it assesses the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war on NATO’s restructuring process. Third, it explores possible scenarios for NATO’s future development.
